WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – May 12th – Fr. Thomas

Happy Mother’s Day Weekend! Many may not be aware that the holiday originated in a small Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. It was 1876, and the nation still mourned the Civil War dead. While teaching a Memorial Day lesson, Mrs. Anna Reeves Jarvis thought of mothers who had lost their sons. She prayed that one day there could be a “Memorial Day” for mothers. The prayer made a deep impression on one of Mrs. Jarvis’ eleven children. Young Anna had seen her mother’s efforts to hold the war-split community and church together. As she grew into adulthood, the younger woman kept Mrs. Jarvis’ dream in her heart. On the day of her mother’s death, Anna was determined to establish Mother’s Day in her honor.

Well, God bless our mothers for all they do, have done, and will continue to do over time. A fifteen-year-old boy came bounding into the house and found his mom in bed. He asked if she was sick. The mom replied, “As a matter of fact, I don’t feel too well.” The son replied, “Well, don’t worry a bit about dinner; I’ll be happy to carry you down to the stove.”

The old spiritual song says, “Sometimes I feel like a motherless child, a long way from home,” but Jesus says “I will not leave you as orphans.” So, no matter how alone we sometimes feel, we are not alone. We are members of the family of Christ, protected eternally by the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus promises us a place at the heavenly table; and by the power of the Holy Spirit, we are carried “up” to the heavenly table. We have a “Reservation,” but we must RSVP and make the effort to arrive there. Just as Jesus offers us a place in His family, so we can’t leave others orphaned on the outside looking in. As Jesus said, “What you do for the least of these, you do for Me”.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – May 5th – Fr. Thomas

Tomorrow, the first Saturday in May, is of course, the running of the 149th Kentucky Derby.  As a Kentucky native, I believe that should be a national holiday in the calendar!  A woman at the Derby sat by herself in the front row.  After a couple races, the man sitting behind her asked, “I noticed the seat next to you is empty.”  The woman said, “That belonged to my late husband.”  The man asked, “Couldn’t you find anyone else to sit there?”  To which the woman replied, “They all chose to attend the funeral instead.”

Bucking the trend of “stay at home bettors,” attendance each year at the Derby proves the critics wrong again. Cynics in both the racing industry and in the Church rightly ask, “Where is everyone the week after the Derby (or Easter Sunday?)  What does it take to lure them back?” For those of us in the Church, it’s quality worship and engaging activities and ministries that make a difference in the lives of people who serve and are served.  As long as we are serious about the Great Commission to go out and evangelize the world and the Great Commandment to love one another, God will not let His Church be deficient of the gifts necessary to do what He asks us to do.  In past generations, The Episcopal Church used to leave it to the Baptists to evangelize people, while we did a pretty fair job of “sacramentalizing” them.  But, today it’s a different world out there, and it’s now up to every Church to evangelize the world around them.  However, if we’re sloppy about our worship and ambiguous about our basic core beliefs then our ancient rituals will have little impact on the people that need them the most.

Finding creative and effective ways of spreading the good news in a rapidly changing environment might mean survival of the fittest: not unlike some race tracks these days that are adding casinos, retail and entertainment centers to boost attendance and revenue.  Yet this is only a short term solution. This is not a call for doing the “same old things in the same old ways.” Certainly one must adapt and be flexible, but trying to be something we are not won’t be effective in the long run. It’s been said, “Ministry is not a fifty yard dash, but a long distance relay race,” with successive generations picking up the baton and carrying forth with the same grace and power which ignited disciples both past and present.  We can enrich the heritage of the past while adapting to our technologically advanced world.

Before the experts write the obituary for the Episcopal Church and thoroughbred racing, perhaps they should take a look at places like Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Saratoga, and Santa Anita; flagships within an industry whose history is more glorious than its present.  Do what we do well despite our differences on the non-essential issues, and look at the congregations who maintain a traditional style, but who utilize technology to market themselves in modern ways.  God bless and “May the Horse be with you.”

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – April 28th – Fr. Thomas

After careful examination, the doctor said to his patient, “Upon looking at the test results, I’m sorry to tell you that you have only a short time to live, perhaps only days. Is there anyone else you would like to see before you go?” “Yes,” said the patient, “I’d like to see another doctor.”

Even though we’re not ready to die, hopefully from a spiritual point of view, we’re prepared for whatever comes our way. God’s plan for our salvation required a sacrifice for our sins. Seeing the Risen Christ was enough for the women who went to the tomb and his disciples. They didn’t need to see anyone else.

When the world sees us, does it see the Risen Christ? Are we mirrors of God’s love to this sinful and broken world – like the mirror of Christ’s image that was left for Veronica on the cloth along the Way to the Cross? Not everyone is called to build bridges, but all can help narrow the gap. Jesus said to Thomas and to all of us, “Come, touch my wounds – and believe.” “Blessed are those who have not seen, but believe.”

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – April 14th – Fr. Thomas

I’m fond of reminding folks that our celebration of Easter is not simply a one day celebration, but a way of life. If we merely think of Jesus’ resurrection as the resuscitation of a dead man, we’re missing something; something amazing and significant. The Gospel accounts do not describe it as starting life over again. He was for the Jews, the “first fruits” of the harvest of those who had died. The Pharisees, for example, were looking forward to the return of God in their own time, but they would have been “taken aback” by Jesus’ appearance. Peter and James would have been startled too, but their faith would have compelled them to ask, “Where are the others?” Good question!

There’s a story about a man named Sam who died and left $50,000 in his will for an elaborate funeral. As the last attendees left, Sam’s wife, Rose tuned to her oldest friend, Sadie, and said, “Well, I’m sure Sam would have been pleased.” “I’m sure you’re right,” replied Sadie, who leaned in close and whispered, “Tell me, how much did it really cost?” “All of it,” said Rose, “$50,000.” “No!”, Sadie exclaimed, “I mean, it was very nice, but really, $50,000?” Rose nodded. The funeral home charged $6,500, I gave the church $500, the food and drinks cost another $500, and the remainder went towards the memorial stone.” Sadie computed the amount quickly and said, “$42,500 for a memorial stone? Exactly how big is it?” “Seven and a half carats.”

On the first Easter Sunday, Jesus rolled away the stone! What stones do we need to “roll away” from our lives in order to live the risen life of Christ? That “priceless” stone at Jesus’ tomb assures us of our entry into heaven if we follow that path that leads to everlasting life with those we love but see no longer, those who rest on another shore and in a greater light; for Christ is Risen, Alleluia! Amen!

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – April 14th – Fr. Thomas

Dear St. David’s Family,

In January 1991, I accepted the vestry’s call to become the third rector of St. David’s in the Pines Church. I remember someone saying at the time that “He’ll be gone in ten years.” Well, no one is more surprised than I that I’ve been your priest for over thirty-two years!

I will forever be grateful for the privilege of being your priest, pastor, and friend, and to be invited to share in so many important events in your lives, and those of your families. However, now the time has come to begin a new season in my own journey. My last Sunday as your Rector will be June 4, 2023.

There have been many times in these past years that I have “re-fallen” in love with St. David’s. I can’t thank you all enough for accompanying me along this journey. For those who recently “boarded the train,” please stay on board and greet the new challenges that lie ahead: to motivate people to be an integral part of the life of the Church and walk together into a deeper relationship with Jesus, and His Blessed Mother.

St. David’s has a bright future ahead, and I am confident that our vestry will choose an able and effective leader for the parish. Please pray for Erin and me, and we will continue to keep you in our prayers too. And always remember our mission: To Welcome Seekers, Form Disciples, and Send Apostles.

With deepest love and gratitude,

Father Thomas

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – April 7th – Fr. Thomas

We all know that Sunday in our Western calendar is the first day of the week because that’s the day on which Jesus rose from the dead. For Jews, as you are aware, Saturday is the Sabbath Day when God “rested” from His six days of creation. The message here is that Jesus’ resurrection “re-creates” life in various forms when we realize that conversion involves a fresh start from the past; leaving behind the sins, doubts, faults of the past and waking henceforth into that new life of Jesus’ Resurrection. In the words of the 19th c. English Cardinal John Henry Newman, “Fear not that your life shall come to an end, but rather that it shall never have a beginning.” In other words, having walked the “Way of the Cross” during Holy Week, are we now willing to “Go the distance in the way that leads to everlasting life?”

What looked like a terminal situation on a Friday, became Good News early on Sunday. “O Death, where is thy sting; O grave, where is thy victory?” We are Christians not simply because we believe that Jesus rose from the dead, but because we believe that we shall rise too. For those who love God never meet for the last time. This is the hope we hold onto; the hope we offer to a world hungry for some good news. And there is no other message worth preaching in cancer hostels and funeral homes. If we don’t have this hope, then what are we putting into our spiritual IRA? What are we betting our life on? For in Thee O Lord, life is changed, not ended. Yet even at the grave we make our song, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLEUIA. CHRIST HAS DIED, CHRIST IS RISEN, CHRIST WILL COME AGAIN.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – March 31st – Fr. Thomas

There is a legend about an ancient village in Spain. The villagers learned that the king would pay a visit! In a thousand years, a king had never come to that village. Excitement grew! “We must throw a big celebration,” the villagers all agreed. But, it was a poor village, and there weren’t many resources. Someone came up with a classic idea. Since many of the villagers made their own wines, the idea was for everyone in the village to bring a large cup of their choice wine to the town square, “We’ll pour it into a large vat and offer it to the king for his pleasure! When the king draws wine to drink, it will be the very best he’s ever tasted!”

The day before the king’s arrival, hundreds of people lined up to make their offering to the honored guest. They climbed a small stairway, and poured their gift through a small opening at the top. Finally, the vat was full! The King arrived, was escorted to the square, given a silver cup and was told to draw some wine, which represented the best the villagers had.

He placed the cup under the spigot, turned the handle, and then drank the wine; but it was nothing more than water. You see, every villager reasoned, “I’ll withhold my best wine and substitute water; what with so many cups of wine in the vat, the king will never know the difference!” The problem was, everyone thought the same thing, and the king was greatly dishonored!

This Sunday is of course Palm Sunday, the beginning of the holiest week of the Christian calendar. So, do we honor our great King, Jesus Christ, by giving him our very best, or do we withhold what we think is important in our earthly lives?

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – March 24th – Fr. Thomas

Do you watch so called “Reality Shows?” Like the actors who portray “real people” on television, do we act differently when the camera is not running, when no one appears to be watching? Lent is a time when we try to emulate, albeit to a much lesser degree, Jesus’ wilderness experience of fasting, trial and temptation. However, let’s be clear: Jesus did not escape from reality by going into the wilderness. In fact, He told us He was truly moving into a place that was quite real, not to mention challenging.

Whatever we might think of as an “escape clause” in Christianity, the “wilderness” is not one of them. The wilderness is hardly a place of escape, it’s a place to which we go and encounter that which is most real: our feelings, convictions, hopes, and concerns that might not be able to find a home in any other area of society. Far from a “retreat” from the real world, Lent is the time when we address those parts of the “real world” which we often try to avoid.

Death is real, but so is the resurrected life promised to those who follow Jesus’ path. As we approach the end of this Lenten season, I hope you’ll take advantage of the many liturgical services to share in the journey and events of Jesus’ Passion, Death, and glorious Resurrection. Let’s not take these moments and opportunities of grace for granted, but rather work to make this Easter like none other.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – March 16th – Fr. Thomas

Blessed St. Patrick’s Day. Patrick was a fifth century Bishop and Missionary in Ireland who is universally remembered for his use of a three leaf clover as an illustration to teach the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Not to be overlooked, however, is the feast of St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and patron saint of fathers, whose commemoration is March 19th. As Christians, we believe in the Incarnation, the Word made flesh; not simply God in man, but God as man. If you believe in the unique vocation of Mary as the Mother of Our Lord, then you’ll respect her husband as a model of fidelity to God and to Mary as well.

Even though our fathers are not always perfect, we can still learn something from them. Joseph had a vocation too. There’s no record of his having any spoken parts in the Gospels, but he did show up when necessary. In other words, “Real Men” show up (and know when to “shut up.”) At the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, the aged prophet Simeon told Mary that, “A sword will pierce your own soul also.” So Joseph led Mary and Baby Jesus into Egypt to evade Herod and his henchmen.

True love costs something. Joseph loved his wife and his Son. He took his commitment seriously, to protect his beloved wife and their Son, while remaining humble and loyal. So God bless our fathers, who sometimes in spite of themselves, teach us to “do the right thing,” and ask for the prayers of St. Joseph, and the Blessed Virgin to help us walk in the way of holiness.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – March 10th – Fr. Thomas

Have you ever noticed how fruit which has been detached from its vine grows old and disintegrates more quickly than fruit which remains on the vine? There’s a parallel here with our Christian faith and discipleship. The message of Pentecost is that we’re all in this together; but it’s a message that we need to hear all throughout the year. For example, when we say the Lord’s Prayer we say, “Our Father. . .give us this day our daily bread. Our fortitude is maintained by virtue of our common life, worship, and witness in our parish.

During this Lenten season, we’re all in this together, praying for the common good, as we march forward to our observance of Jesus’ Passion, Death, and Resurrection: and thanks to all who provide leadership in our various ministries to “Welcome Seekers, Form Disciples and Send Apostles.”
