WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – August 8th – Fr. Thomas

As another school year begins next week, I’m reminded of a comparable “classroom situation” Jesus shared with His disciples when he took them up the mountain, and said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of God. Blessed are the meek, and those who mourn. Blessed are the merciful. Blessed are those who thirst for justice, for those who are persecuted and those who suffer. But, be glad and rejoice, for yours is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Then Simon Peter said, “Are we supposed to know this?” And Andrew said, “Do we have to write this down?” And James said, “Will we have a test on this?” And Phillip said, “I don’t have any paper.” And Bartholomew said, “Do we have to turn this in?” And John said, “The other disciples didn’t have to learn this!” And Matthew said, “May I go to the bathroom?” and Judas said, “What does this have to do with real life?”

Then one of the Pharisees who was present asked to see Jesus’ lesson plan and inquired, “Where is your anticipatory set, and what are your objectives in the cognitive domain?” And Jesus wept.

It’s been said that life is like a classroom, we don’t “graduate” until we get to heaven. So meanwhile, remember that “Learning leads to understanding and understanding leads to doing.” One cannot love what one does not know. Or in the words of the 19 th c. Bishop Phillips Brooks, “Duty makes us do things well; love makes us do things beautifully.”

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – August 1st – Fr. Thomas.

One morning in 1888 Alfred Nobel, inventor of dynamite, awoke to read his own obituary. The obituary was printed as a result of a simple journalistic error. It was actually Alfred’s brother that had died, and the reporter mistakenly reported the death of the wrong brother. Of course Alfred was disturbed under the circumstances, but to Alfred the shock was overwhelming because he saw himself as the world saw him – the “Dynamite King,” the great industrialist who had made an immense fortune from explosives. This, as far as the general public was concerned, was the entire purpose of Alfred’s life. None of his true intentions to break down the barriers that separated men and ideas for peace were recognized or given serious consideration. He was simply a merchant of death, and for that alone he would be remembered.

As he read the obituary with horror, he resolved to make clear to the world the true meaning and purpose of his life. This could be done through the final disposition of his fortune. His last will and testament — an endowment of five annual prizes for outstanding contributions in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace (the sixth category of economics was added later) would be the expression of his life’s ideals and ultimately would be why we would remember him. The result was the most valuable of prizes given to those who had done the most for the cause of world peace. It’s called today, the “Nobel Peace Prize.”

They say peace comes with a price; but “who” pays the price and to what extent? In the countries of the world that endure warfare and violence, lasting peace may be a “prize,” but yet remains out of reach. As we watch the Summer Olympics on television, we’re reminded that anybody can start the race, but they don’t give out the awards until you finish. So may that peace which passes all understanding abide in your hearts, minds, and souls today and forever.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – July 25th – Fr. Thomas.

Toward the end of his life, when he was suffering from the accumulated effects of a lifetime of drinking, W.C. Fields was discovered reading the Bible by one of his friends. The astonished friend asked: “What are you – an atheist – doing reading the Bible?” Fields replied, “I’m looking for loopholes.”

Well, the good news is that because of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection on Easter Sunday, we don’t need to look for “loopholes.” The “hole” in the grave where Jesus’ body was interred was proof enough of God’s awesome power to bring back to life that which was “dead.” Conversion is more than just a “one time” experience; rather it is a daily occurrence for those who know and accept the loving grace of God in their lives. Oscar Wilde observed that “Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future.” Or as St. Paul says to the Corinthians, “If our hope in Christ has been for this life only, we are of all people the most to be pitied.” But we don’t need to be pitied, because “Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again.”

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – July 18th – Fr. Thomas.

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements, and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky.

The worst had happened, everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. “God, how could you do this to me?” he cried. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island – it had come to rescue him. “How did you know I was here?” asked the weary man of his rescuers. “We saw your smoke signal,” they replied.

It’s easy to get discouraged sometimes when things appear to be going badly. We shouldn’t lose heart, though, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, the next time your little hut is burning to the ground, it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – July 11th – Fr. Thomas.

A Wall Street Journal article six years ago reported a story of a defunct Roman Catholic Church in Scituate, Massachusetts (St. Frances Xavier Cabrini) where some faithful remnant of parishioners had been staging a twenty-four hour vigil in the empty church building since it was closed by the Archdiocese in 2004. That’s a long time to grieve over a congregation that had once been a thriving parish. However, a local judge had ordered that the nearly one hundred people staging the vigil had to vacate and cease from their round-the-clock watch. Legally, they were trespassing in the eyes of the court, even though they had filed an appeal. Diocesan officials had claimed that they had no choice but to shut down the congregation, given the lack of financial support and lack of priests. Overall, the number of practicing Roman Catholics has actually increased in recent decades, while the number of priests has declined, resulting in mergers of congregations or closures.

Let me be clear: St. David’s is in no danger of closing down. But, on the other hand, what if our church ceased to exist? How many people would be affected by our absence? Prior to the Pandemic, our parish was making a sizeable difference in our community in many and diverse ways, but it takes the sacrificial and steady support of all of us to see that the Good News of the Kingdom is seen, heard, and felt by all who rely on us as an agent of God’s grace and love. So, thanks for your continued support throughout the summer and for years to come.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – July 4th – Fr. Thomas.

A father asks his Boy Scout son if he’d done his “Good Deed” for the day. The boy replies, “Sure, I helped an old lady cross the street. It took twelve of us.” “Why so many?” the father asks. “Because she didn’t want to cross!”

Every act of kindness done solely for the sake of helping others is a sign of God’s love. However, if the act is done expecting something in return, or to get our ticket to heaven “stamped,” or out of guilt, or to help only those we like, or those who are “like” us, what reward have you? Jesus reminds us that we should love, respect, and even forgive, when necessary, those who differ from us.

So, maybe you don’t know what to do about epidemics, or starvation in Africa, or terrorism and violence in the Middle East, and even in our own country. Yet, even our acts of prayer and manner of life can have a transformative effect when they inspire people to act like Christians in word and in deed. As for this holiday weekend, as our nation and our world become more polarized, God asks us, “Who is my neighbor?” I’ll give John Wesley the last word: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – June 27th – Fr. Thomas.

A security guard at the Louvre Museum in Paris was once asked, “If the museum was on fire and you had the chance to grab only one painting to take out with you, which one would you choose?” The guard replied, “The one closest to the exit.” As they say, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!” Natural disasters, illnesses, financial upheavals, amongst other events, bring our priorities into perspective. Hopefully, it won’t take a catastrophic event or disaster to help us focus on the important things and especially the people in our lives.

Sadly, some folks have everything to live with, but little to live for! So, in the words of the 16 th c. Spanish monk, St. John of the Cross, “Remember, it’s not what they take from you that counts; it’s what you do with what you have left.”

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – June 20th – Fr. Thomas.

A young couple went on a camping trip. They set up their tent and fell asleep. Some hours later, the man woke his wife and said, “Honey, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.” She replied, “I see millions of stars.” He asked, “What does that tell you?” She pondered for a minute, and replied, “Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, it’s evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.” Then, after a brief pause, the wife asks: “Well, husband, what does it tell you?” The man was silent for a moment and then said. “Someone has stolen our tent.”

Through all the twists and turns of life, don’t let anyone steal your faith. If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere anyway. Life may be confusing and unpredictable at times, but we travel along life’s highway knowing that when we get to wit’s end we’ll find God there. WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – June 13th – Fr. Thomas.

A visiting bishop went to an unfamiliar church to celebrate the Eucharist. There was a microphone on the altar, and being uncertain whether it was switched on, he tapped it gently with no result. So leaning very close to it, he said in a loud whisper which echoed around the church: “We need a technical engineer; there’s something wrong with this microphone.” To which the well-trained congregation replied, “And also with you.”

I think that many people would agree that during the past year and a half, we have all learned some new technical skills! The wonderful technology that we have all been taking advantage of this past year is great, but many have told me that it does not replace the in-person worship, where they can see, feel, hear and taste the real thing.

What might be different in our worship, or remain the same, once we are on the other side of the pandemic, who knows? We do know that Technology can be a useful servant or a tyrannical master – depending on how it is used. So, for the time being and until it is safer for high-risk folks to resume regular attendance at public functions, I would like to give a big thanks to all the volunteers who provide the technical support for many to continue to worship, albeit from home.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – June 6th – Fr. Thomas.

While helping our “Lay Weeders” landscape and clear out the vegetation debris recently, I was reminded of the story about a man who one day while mowing the lawn noticed a box that was left on his doorstep. So busy with his chores and wanting to get everything just right he didn’t bother to open the package. So he put it on a shelf in the garage and continued mowing and pruning the trees and shrubs. The man was always fighting with a certain tree in his yard, which had beautiful flowers, but had thorny branches that would often cut into his hands. He would frequently say to his wife that although the tree was very beautiful, it was a constant fight to keep looking good.

Years later when the man was cleaning out his garage, a box fell from the shelves. The man recognized the box as the same one he had received years before so he quickly opened it— hoping it wasn’t anything perishable. When the box was open, he saw a handwritten note from his wife: “These will be a big help to you from now on when you have to trim that beautiful, yet thorny tree.” Under the note the man pulled out a pair of long leather work gloves. He sat down and smiled and thought of all the times he could have used them, if he’d only taken the time to open the box!

The feast of Pentecost two weeks ago and Trinity Sunday last week should have reminded each of us to discern what gifts God has given us for the spread of His Kingdom. The Sacraments are the “road signs” along our pilgrimage, the Bible is the moral compass and guide, and the Fellowship of His Trinitarian life connects us to His saving grace. In the words of St. Teresa of Calcutta, “We cannot always do great things; we can only do little things with great love.”
