WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – October 24th – Fr. Thomas

I began my ministry as an acolyte when I was ten years old, in my local parish church in suburban Northern Kentucky, but when I was in my teens, I was also a regularly scheduled server at the Convent of the Transfiguration in Glendale Ohio, just north of Cincinnati. The nuns “imported” boys from local parishes to serve at the Sunday morning mass at 7:30 a.m. God bless my great uncle who would make the thirty-five minute drive across the river once a month or more, then transport me back to our home parish for the weekly 10:00 a.m. mass, until I got my own driver’s license and car.

The Sisters of the Transfiguration is a religious order in our Church founded in 1898 by Eva Marie Proctor – yes, a daughter of the Proctor family, as in Proctor and Gamble. In fact, the convent grounds and chapel were built directly across the road from the family estate where the young Proctor descendent had grown up. (The convent also operates a prestigious middle school to this day.) Whenever I see the company name on one of the various products in our house, I wonder what thoughts must have crossed Eva Marie’s mind on a regular basis to gaze across the road and speculate on what “might have been,” if she’d remained under the roof of the immediate family and an heiress to the family fortune.

God doesn’t call everyone to follow the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience; but those who accept the call are examples in some ways of what God expects all followers of Christ to do: not necessarily to “give up something,” but to take on something. As I’m fond of saying, if one has drinkable water, food for three meals a day, access to medical care and education, and a place to live; that person is rich in the eyes of two thirds of the world. Toys R Us is not simply the name of a store, rather it’s a way of life for many people, particularly when luxuries become necessities. But the Christian Gospel reminds us that “No one is so poor that they have nothing to give; and no one is so rich that he or she has nothing to receive.” As Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – October 17th – Fr. Thomas

Paddy Kerrigan was going through Irish customs after his trip to France. Among his suitcases stood a brown gallon container. “And what might this be?” asked the customs officer. “Sure, that is holy water from Lourdes I’m bringing back to my loved ones.” The customs officer unscrewed the top, sniffed, blinked, raised the bottle, and tasted the contents. “Water, did you say? This is brandy, strong French brandy!” “Praise the Lord!” cried Kerrigan; “Another miracle!”

We’re all familiar with the poplar story in John’s Gospel of Jesus changing water into wine, a hundred and eighty gallons, at the wedding feast of Cana; (after they had already consumed the first lot.) So how does our walk with Jesus change our life for the better? How does it transform our emptiness into something even greater? When the wine of our souls runs out, follow Mary’s words, “Do whatever he tells you.” And for that reason alone– she ought to be our heroine; because as a woman of faith Mary believed Jesus could do anything.

So “Hang in There.” Remember, though, before God can fill us up, He has to empty out “the old water” first. God can only fill us up in proportion to the emptiness of our cup. We are earthen vessels; and God wants to wash out the guilt, sorrow, resentment, selfishness, and pride of our lives. The Good News is that we don’t walk the journey alone. Mary and all the saints accompany us. As she was there at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, so she was there at its earthly end too. In Him is the “Fullness of Joy;” and we pray that His joy might be in us and that our joy might be full. Jesus saved the best for last; because the best is yet to come.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – October 10th – Fr. Thomas

The telephone rang in a noted surgeon’s home on the outskirts of a large city. It was in the early hours of the morning. When the surgeon answered it, he heard the voice of a staff doctor at the hospital where he worked calling him to come immediately. A child was violently ill and the only answer was surgery.

He quickly got dressed, grabbed his doctor’s case, and drove toward the city. At the first traffic light at the bare edge of town, he had to stop when the signal turned red. Then it happened: the passenger side door opened, and a man entered and seated himself down. He was dressed in an old brown corduroy coat with a shabby brown cap on his head. When the light changed, the surgeon started to pull away only to have a gun poked into his ribs, and the passenger said, “Stop the car!” What would the doctor do? He stopped, and when the man said, “Get out!” what else could he do. He got out; and the man took over the car and sped away.

The surgeon walked with his case to the nearest gas station, which was quite a distance ahead, very upset over what had happened. As soon as he reached the gas station, he called for a taxi which was late in arriving. Eventually he arrived at the hospital. “Too late!” They told him; the child had died. “If only he had been there on time,” he thought. Then the inevitable and difficult question: “Would you speak with the child’s family?” Of course, he consented, wondering what to say. When he entered the room, there was only one person present: the very man in the brown corduroy coat and shabby brown cap who had stolen his car! The thief had forced out of his life the only person who could have saved his child’s life!

Apparently this is a true story; and sadly, too many people often force God out of their life, particularly at those moments when they need God’s presence and saving grace the most. Regular sacramental worship, reading the scriptures, saying one’s prayers, and where possible, ministering to those in need of our kindness, will help keep us on the right path, and prevent those people and moments from evicting the very person who can help us the most – Jesus Christ our Lord, by the power of His Holy Spirit.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – October 3rd – Fr. Thomas

There’s a place for healthy disbelief in life, and a place for trust and acceptance. St. Thomas the apostle, understandably, had trouble moving from one to the other. Ice-hockey hall of farmer Phil Esposito experienced the same difficulty. He was one of a number of North American ice-hockey players who went to Moscow to play the Soviet team in the early 1970’s, during the height of the Cold War. Assigned to a hotel room, the Americans suspected the place might be “bugged.” Esposito recalls, “We searched the room for microphones. Finally, we rolled back the rug, and found a funny looking round piece of metal imbedded in the floor. We figured we had found the bug. We dug it out of the floor, then heard a loud crash beneath us. We had released the anchor to the chandelier in the ceiling below.”

Yes, there is a place for healthy disbelief in life, but it can also lead to paranoia. As we’ve often heard, “You just can’t live your life that way!” The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity; while the optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.

Blessing of the Animals: This Sunday in Honor of the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi at 11:00 a.m. (Please be sure to leash or cage your beloved pets, thank you.)

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – September 26th – Fr. Thomas

A middle aged couple arrived at a little hotel desk in a busy city one stormy night. The lady was pregnant, tired and ill. They had hunted all over town and found no place to sleep. When the young hotel manager realized their need, he said to the husband, “I don’t have any rooms left, but I’m sorry about your wife. My wife and I wouldn’t miss our room; so take it and stay here for the night.”

Two years later, the guest was revealed as a close relative of John Jacob Astor, who shortly thereafter, told the manager, “If you will allow me, I will build for you the greatest hotel ever erected in the United States.”

For years that young man, George Boldt, was the manager of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. He had practiced, TLC, Tender, Loving, Care. When we show kindness to those who can repay us, it’s called networking. When we show kindness with no thought of repayment, it’s called love.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – September 19th – Fr. Thomas

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less than today, a ten year old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. “How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked. “Fifty cents,” replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and looked closely at the coins in it. “Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?” he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. “Thirty five cents,” she brusquely answered. The little boy again counted his coins and said, “I’ll just have the plain ice cream.” The waitress brought the ice cream, placed the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress returned to the table, tears came to her eyes. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he wanted to leave enough for the tip.

How often do we overlook those who serve or take for granted those whose job is not necessarily high paying, but if they didn’t do it many would notice? In the words of the late jazz musician, Lionel Hampton, “Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart, not in the mind.”

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – September 12th – Fr. Thomas

After a great amount of difficulty and frustration, a young couple finally conceived their first child – in fact, the mother was carrying triplets. Her doctors insisted that she stay in bed for the duration of her pregnancy. After their friends learned the exciting news, flowers, notes, and cards filled their small house. After church, the pastor said to the husband, “We’ll be praying for you two in these next few months.” The husband’s response caught the pastor a little off guard. “Good,” he said, “And we’re going to hold all of those who prayed for us responsible.”

Although the reply was meant to be in jest, it reflects an important understanding about prayer. Prayer is not the wrestling of favors and gifts from a stingy God. Prayer is about trying to understand and accept God’s will for us. True prayer is seeking God’s will in all things – to give thanks for what God has given us by sharing those gifts with one another; to treasure His love and forgiveness and reconciliation.

The English saint Thomas More wrote, “Give us the grace, O Lord to work for what we pray for.” So, what prayers are we willing to work for? Our prayerful ACTS (an acronym for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) are the way to living a closer life in the Spirit and being more effective in our discipleship. Prayer is not a spare wheel we take out only when needed; it’s the steering wheel that directs us in the right path. So, pray to God, but keep rowing to the shore, because God promises a safe landing, not necessarily a smooth passage.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – September 5th – Fr. Thomas

Thomas Wheeler, CEO of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, tells on himself: He and his wife were driving along an interstate highway when he noticed that their car was low on gas. Wheeler got off the highway at the next exit and soon found a rundown gas station with just one gas pump. He asked the lone attendant to fill the tank (back in the days prior to self-service) and check the oil; then went for a short walk around the station to stretch his legs.

As he was returning to the car, he noticed that his wife and the attendant were engaged in an animated conversation. The conversation stopped as he paid the attendant. But as he was getting back into the car, he saw the attendant wave and heard him say, “It was great talking to you.”

As they drove out of the station, Wheeler asked his wife if she knew the man. She readily admitted she did. They had gone to high school together and had dated steadily for about a year. “Boy, were you lucky that I came along,” bragged Wheeler. “If you had married him, you’d be the wife of a gas station attendant instead of a chief executive officer.” “My dear,” replied his wife, “If I had married him, he’d be the chief executive officer and you’d be the gas station attendant.”

On this Labor Day Weekend, let us remember that our work here on earth, regardless of our compensation, benefits, and status, is a preparation for the eternal life promised to us as disciples of Christ. Our job is to make new Christians, and to make Christians new.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – August 29th – Fr. Thomas

“What terrible sins have I committed?” Surely I don’t deserve this affliction!” cried Reva to her hospital roommate. Reva had just been told that her cancer had spread to her lungs and bones. After a mastectomy and chemotherapy, Reva, a young woman, had believed her breast cancer was under control, for which she was thankful to God.

Reva had generously thrown herself into her church work in various capacities. After she had begun to experience back pain and general weakness, she learned that her cancer had spread. Her roommate tried to console her by telling her that God was a God of love and that He loved her. She assured Reva that God was not punishing her for any sins she may have committed; because everyone has fallen short of God’s expectations. “You must continue to witness to your faith even through the bad times, and God will continue to use you.” Reva calmed down somewhat and said, “I must look terrible because I’ve been crying for hours and I want to look good when my husband comes to visit shortly.” Her roommate replied, “Honey, I don’t know how you look! I’m blind.”

Even during challenging and dubious times, particularly during the present pandemic, God calls us to see “The Big Picture,” and to focus on the things that truly matter in life. In the words of Aldous Huxley, “Experience is not what happens to a man; it is what a man does with what happens to him.”
