WEEKLY MESSAGE – June 21st – Bishop McGregor

As a Christian, we are to be life long disciples, continuing to want to learn about God and life. This past week I had the opportunity to learn more about our newest public holiday called Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”). It marks the day when federal troops arrived in GalvestonTexas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.

Abraham Lincoln was trying to bring about unity in the United States but our nation was split resulting in a bloody civil war. He made a last-ditch, but carefully calculated, decision regarding the institution of slavery in America. The Emancipation Proclamation declared all enslaved people free in the rebellious states as of January 1, 1863. Unfortunately, this didn’t include the northern states nor the boarder states. But it did eventually lead to the 13th amendment to abolish all slavery in the USA being ratified in December 1865. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.

It became a Texas holiday in 1980 but had been celebrated in some places in the south since 1866. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday to be celebrated on June 19th.

Here’s a prayer to reflect upon that day and to remind us of the freedom we have in Christ.  Holy and righteous God, you created us in your image. Grant us grace to contend fearlessly against evil and to make no peace with oppression. Help us, like those of generations before us, resist the evil of slavery and human bondage in any form and any manner of oppression. Help us to use our freedoms to bring justice among people and nations everywhere, to the glory of your Holy name through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – June 14, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – June14th – Bishop McGregor

This week I attended a zoom about healthy brain growth. They mentioned five things: eating healthy fat, exercising regularly, managing stress, drinking lots of water and eating real food. These things could ultimately help us live longer. The presenters also said “stay away from processed foods and that most fruits and vegetables we eat don’t have the same nutrients in them because they are harvested too early”. They promoted eating lots of real vegetables and fruits grown locally. I naturally began to think about which ones I need to lean more into.
Then I began to ponder on how does this relates to us being a healthy Christian? What are the things which we need to do in order to be in a mature growing relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit? I believe there are at least six disciplines which we need to do regularly: to pray (communicate to/from), to give towards God’s kingdom, to obey, to fast, to evangelize, and to disciple. By living into these six disciplines, we will more naturally become a healthy Christian. We might not be in a position to juggle all of these at once but we could juggle a few at a time. Another way to look at this is which one can I start at now?
As the body of Christ, we are here to help and encourage each other to celebrate these disciplines.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – June 7th – Bishop McGregor

Just imagine…..
This past week I went to visit a church parishioner to bring communion. I was happy to do so, but never realized what impact that would have on me. I went to serve, and yet, I was served. I came away filled with God’s love and joy.  Happiness embraced my soul.
We don’t always have to look at things as duties, but rather as opportunities to encounter God’s joy in our relationships with others. What can you imagine doing this week for another person and while serving, having that opportunity turn to joy and love?

WEEKLY MESSAGE – May 24th – Bishop McGregor

This week I attended the annual diocesan clergy conference about congregational development. The primary focus is to grow a healthy congregation. One of the models they shared with us was regarding the Benedictine Life. Its premise is that there are three components of a good spiritual life. First, one must have stability in his or her life. It’s about having balance and rhythm in one’s life and community (St. David’s). Secondly, it’s also about obedience. It’s not necessarily about obeying as one understands it in the English language but rather from the Latin word (Obedir) which means to listen. One is to listen to God and listen to his people (community). The third component is the Conversion of Life. Ultimately, it’s about one’s conversion and renewal to Christ. But in order to get there, one has to make significant choices at the moment of change.
What does this mean for me and you at St. David’s in the Pines? In order for us to have a good spiritual life, it means that we need to make space for balance and rhythms in our lives and to listen to God and others while making significant choices which bring about change for each other and for the community. One recent example is that we started a healing service last Sunday (third Sunday of each month). We had approximately 40 people in attendance, more than what we anticipated. It was an amazing time: starting out with the healing litany, calling on the Holy Spirit, praying for one’s self and for others, laying hands on others, listening to God, worshiping God, anointing with oil and providing space for God. The healing team didn’t want to leave because of the God’s presence was vivid and real.
And it’s true! Why would we want to leave the Presence of the One who loves us most deeply? Thanks be to God for the comfort of the Holy Spirit and the promise that God is with us everywhere, all the time.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – May 17, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – May 17th – Bishop McGregor

Happy Pentecost
The word “Pentecost” is Greek, meaning fifty, reflecting the fifty-day countdown after Easter. It is one of three great Jewish pilgrimage festivals (the others being Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles).  Pentecost is also known as the Feast of Harvest or Feast of Weeks (seven weeks after the Passover). It was a time when the people thanked God for the giving of their harvest. In this case it was first fruits of the harvest.
After the temple was destroyed in 70 AD, the Jews changed this celebration to focus more on the giving of the Torah (the first five books of the temple.
For us Christians, Pentecost is a major feast for us as we thank God for giving us the Holy Spirit which dwells within every Christian. Secondly, we celebrate Pentecost as the inauguration of the Church’s mission in the world. Empowered by the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are to go out into our neighborhoods and the wider world; Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, witnessing to the risen Christ.
What does witnessing look like for you in your neighborhood? In your county? In your world?

WEEKLY MESSAGE – May 10, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – May 10th- Bishop McGregor

This week Patsy and I are hosting a new friend of ours, named Jonah. He is a Kenyan priest, who is studying at one of the Episcopal seminaries in Sewanee, Tennessee. We have spent much time talking about African and American cultures, families and friends. It has been invigorating and encouraging to both myself and my wife. Because we lived in Kenya for four years, we have some friends and commonalities about his homeland. But most of all, we were able to pray and study the Bible together. There is something about praying and studying the Bible which rises above any cultural, economical, educational, social and political barriers. Somehow, when we focus on God, it lifts us above the temporal to the eternal as we transcend into the sacredness of God and one another. The Celtic missions call this sacredness, the thin places between heaven and earth, where God is known. May your day, week, month and year be filled with thin places.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – May 3, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – May 5th – Bishop McGregor

Last week, I talked briefly with one of the students at St. David’s School towards the end of the day. He greeted me with a big smile and began talking to me as if we were friends. His mother was stunned and shocked about the fact that he was talking to me. Her mouth was wide open, and her head was bobbing at him and then at me and then back to him while we conversed. After a minute or so, she couldn’t take what was happening any longer and she looked straight at me and said, “He doesn’t talk to people.” It was a breath of fresh air for her to see her son being at ease talking to me, asking questions, and sharing his life. I found this time holy, sacred, and yet ordinary. This time was holy and sacred because of our acknowledgment of God’s presence in space and time with us. It was ordinary because it was a normal part of our daily lives to interact with others.
It’s significant for us to find sacred and holy moments in the ordinary spaces we live and move. It’s important that we ask ourselves each day, where is Jesus in my ordinary life? I pray that we invite Jesus into our spaces each day, waiting to see what he does.
Serving Christ Together,
+Todd

WEEKLY MESSAGE – April 26, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – April 26th – Bishop McGregor
Leading St. David’s school chapel was a bit out of my comfort zone and I wasn’t sure if I would relate or communicate effectively to the children. But I was willing to give it a try. After two weeks of worshipping together with the young students, I look forward to it now and the children are an inspiration for me. With large smiles, they are happy to be there, and sing and talk without any reservations. They are generous, kind, attentive and passionate. One of the most joy-filled times is when one of them yells at the top of his or her lungs “Bishop Todd”. My heart begins to melt away my anxiety and fills it with peace and joy.
It’s amazing how we can overcome our fears when leaning into the situation and confronting our anxieties.  I was uncertain about this situation and God wanted me to lean into my discomfort. This opportunity to be around people I didn’t feel comfortable turned fears into a blessing. In the Greek language the same word is used for ‘test’ and ‘temptation.’ God wants to bless us and for us to be blessed, we have to take a risk and settle into our discomfort. I thank the Lord for bringing this test, and the children of the St. David’s community and filling my life with joy every Tuesday.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – April 19, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – April 19th – Bishop McGregor

On Tuesday, I was blessed by meeting two people separately who were looking for hope and change in their lives. One stopped by the church to check it out because he was looking for a new place to worship and the other one wanted to become an official member here. I had the great honor of spending time with them to provide hope during this transition in their lives.
The season of Easter is a time for hope and change. The disciple’s expectations had been dashed when Jesus died and they had to fend for themselves. Their lives were full of fear and anxiety. When Jesus greeted them after the resurrection, they thought he was a ghost. But once Jesus was present with them, eating with them, talking to them, and breaking bread together, their fears and anxiety subsided.
The lesson for us all during the Easter season is finding hope and change when we commune with Jesus. Some examples of communing with Jesus are talking and listening to Jesus during our meals, during our daily devotions and our fellowship with others.
My fellowship with the two people provided hope while they transitioned. May we also consider how we can be agents of hope and change for others.
Serving Christ Together,
Bishop Todd
