WEEKLY MESSAGE – March 15th – Fr. Cederberg

Bodies are funny things, aren’t they?  I mean, the fact that we all walk upright, have two eyes in the front of our heads, and ten toes.  Do you ever look at yourself in the mirror and laugh?  I suppose that’s why it is so easy to take our bodies for granted.
And yet, how intricately made we all are.  Did you know there are 43 different muscles in the face alone, making it capable of over 10,000 different facial expressions.  The eye alone has over 2 million working parts.  Our bodies contain over 7 trillion nerves.  If you lined them up, they would stretch 45 miles!  That’s almost twice the width of Lake Okeechobee!
The more we come to understand the human body, the more it captures our awe.  No wonder, then, that the body is such an important part of our spiritual life.  Our spiritual forebears knew that we couldn’t just sit and think our faith.  We had to live it out.  Kneeling when we pray.  Opening our mouths to sing and to read.  Lifting up our hands to receive the sacrament.  Our bodies are the vehicle through which we receive, and give, the ministry of Jesus.
Perhaps part of our lenten discipline can be giving thanks for our bodies, and asking how we can use them to soak up more of the love of Christ.  Perhaps we could sit in silence for a bit, marveling at the body of Jesus, and how he so surrendered himself for us.  And perhaps there are ways that we can more fully let Jesus use our bodies to love others.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – March 8th – Fr. Cederberg

If you were to look on a liturgical calendar (yes, there is such a thing!), you would see that this coming Sunday is called Laetare Sunday, “laetare” being the Latin word for rejoice.  It always falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, similar to Gaudete (which also means rejoice) or Rose Sunday in Advent.
It is interesting that those who designed the calendar with penitential seasons also included days of celebration.  Why is that?  Why not just be penitential all the time?
Wisely they understood that with all of the disciplines of the Church there must always be an undergirding of joy.  They knew that it made no sense to live a life of discipline for its own sake.  Discipline exists for the sake of joy.  The writer of Hebrews tells us that Jesus “for the joy set before him endured the cross”.  The joy made it worth the suffering.  And what was that joy?  It was us!  With his eye fixed on us, he was willing to endure whatever it took.  The joy gave him courage.
And so it is for us.  We don’t take on the disciplines of prayer, fasting, generosity, etc., for their own sakes.  We take them on because they allow us to be more free.  To be able to love more effectively.  To be able to become more like Jesus.  To be filled with his joy.
So, when you’re tempted to grumble about the disciplines of Lent or all of the hard work it takes to become a person of character in this world, don’t forget the joy that lies before you.  It will give you the courage to do what needs to be done.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – March 3rd – Fr. Cederberg

The balance between law and grace is one of those constant struggles of the spiritual life.  At any given time, which do I emphasize?  The answer, according to Jesus, is both.  You can’t have one without the other.
On the one hand, the law is a gift from God.  It teaches us right from wrong.  It is a guide by which to lead our lives, so we should obey it.  Yet, it poses a quandary.  How do I really obey it?  The law says don’t murder.  That’s great.  I haven’t killed anyone today, so I’m good.  Check that one off the list, and I am free to condemn those who do in fact murder.
Jesus, however, grabs us and tells us to look again.  He says that even to be angry with someone is to be guilty of murder.  Uh oh.  Suddenly the demands of the law come home.  Am I innocent of murder, then, even though I haven’t spoken to my neighbor in a year because we had an argument over trimming trees in our back yard?  Obeying the law is about more than external observance.  It is about the condition of the heart.  The law is a hard teacher, and it forces us to cry out for grace, looking at others not through the eyes of self-righteousness, but of humility.  And humility is always a bitter pill to swallow.
As you work your way through Lent you might want to grab your prayer book and flip to page 350 which we have been using to recite the Ten Commandments (Decalogue) each Sunday.  How do you feel about it as you read? How do you think about others? With the example of Jesus in mind, the end result can be humility, gratitude and empathy for others.  Those are pretty wonderful gifts for the season of Lent.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – February 23rd – Fr. Cederberg

What don’t you know?  That’s a big question, but one we don’t think enough about.  Psychologists tell us that our brains can only hold a certain amount of information, so the only way we can really function in today’s world is to make big guesses.  We have to cut to the chase.  Yet, that means that even in the best of cases we are right only about 85% of the time.  Usually 40-60%.  The rest of the time we’re winging it, and trying to sell what we think might be right to others around us – whether family members, friends or clients.
That’s why Jesus goes for the jugular when talking about the truth.  It’s nothing to play around with.  For us, the truth isn’t some abstract principle out there in the universe, or the residue in the bottom of a test tube.  For us, truth is HIM!  Though often misquoted, Jesus puts it clearly.  “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”   (John 8:31, 32)
The season of Lent is a great time to become ruthlessly honest with ourselves.  What do we really know?  What are we just guessing at, just because we have to get through the day?  Instead, we can relax.  We don’t have to find the truth.  The Truth has found us!  Let us devote ourselves to knowing more about him, and through him to know more about the world and about other people who are made in his image.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – February 16th – Fr. Cederberg

Hard to believe, but Lent has begun.  It seems like I am just recovering from Christmas!  But, the pages of the calendar turn, and time sweeps us along.
It helps for me to remember that the word “Lent” means “Spring”.  Far from dark and gloomy, Lent is the time for green shoots and blossoms.  And just as things come alive in the Spring, so God’s people awaken to the calling of new life during Lent.
Engaging in the disciplines of Lent, then, is really like utilizing the tools of a garden.  They help us break up the hardened soil of our hearts, remove the rocks, and prune the deadwood that clears the way for an explosion of color and flavor.  It can be hard work, yet it is worth it as we imagine the mouthwatering harvest that is to come.
So as we make decisions about what to give up (Do I really need to spend so much time on the computer?), and decide what to take on (What about checking in on that neighbor that I’ve been neglecting?), we are working with God to prepare a garden that will sprout into things beautiful and tasty.
I can’t wait to see what we will harvest here at St. David’s!

Gardening and Grounds Clean Up on Saturday, February 24th at 9 am – 12 noon.  We need volunteers to come and help.  Wear long sleeves and gardening gloves.  We could use a chain saw if anyone has one.  Pizza and salad will be served for lunch.

Prayer Shawl Group.  If anyone is interested in starting it back up, we need people who can knit, crochet and people to deliver completed and blessed shawls to recipients.  For further information, please contact Kimberly Gardner at kimfgardner@comcast.net or her cell (561) 596-9020.

Bible Study at 9:00 a.m. is scheduled on Sunday in the Sunday school classroom.

Women’s Bible Study is scheduled on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the Mark Room.

Tuesdays:  Holy Eucharist at 8:30 a.m.

Sunday’s Worship – We are open for live worship on Sundays at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.  We also “live-stream” our 10 a.m. service.
