WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – August 23rd – Fr. Thomas.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta’s earthly birthday is August 26, but her heavenly birthday is Sept 5, 1997.
Among all the many quotes for which she is known, here is one of my favorites.
It’s engraved on the wall of her home for children in Calcutta and is worth engraving in our own hearts and minds.
People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered; Forgive them
anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind
anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true
enemies;
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – August 16th – Fr. Thomas.
/in Weekly Message /by Saint David'sWEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – August 16th – Fr. Thomas.
A teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class. She came to the part of the story where the first pig was trying to gather the building materials for his home. She read, “And so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw and said, “Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house.” The teacher paused then asked the class, “And what do you think the man said?” One little boy raised his hand and said very matter-of-factly: “I think the man would have said, “Well, I’ll be damned a talking pig!” (The teacher had to leave the room.)
Moral of the story… beware of underestimating the abilities and gifts of others, regardless of their age, education, wealth, race or gender. History has left us a number of examples of those who overcame obstacles or were initially misjudged. “He didn’t walk till he was four years old and didn’t start to read till he was seven.” One of his teachers labeled him as “mentally slow, unsociable and adrift in his foolish dreams.” This was said about Albert Einstein. “He’s too stupid to learn anything,” someone said of Thomas Edison. “He possesses minimal football knowledge and lacks motivation,” an expert said of a beginning coach named Vince Lombardi. He went bankrupt several times and was fired by the editor of a local newspaper because he apparently had a “lack of vision.” The man they fired was Walt Disney. He failed the sixth grade and had a lifetime of setbacks and defeats. Finally as a senior citizen, Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of England. Ronald Reagan was told that he didn’t look “presidential enough” to play the lead role in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, which was played by Jimmy Stewart. And Marilyn Monroe was told by a Hollywood producer to find a job as a secretary because she’d never make it in Hollywood. So if one doesn’t like the way life looks, perhaps change the way we look at life, because the pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity; but the optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – August 9th – Fr. Thomas.
/in Weekly Message /by Saint David'sWEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – August 9th – Fr. Thomas.
After a great deal of difficulty and frustration, a young couple finally conceived their first child, in fact, she was expecting triplets! After their friends heard the exciting news, flowers and note cards started arriving at their home. After the Sunday service at their church, the pastor said, “I’ll be praying for you in the coming months.” The husband’s response caught their pastor a little off guard. “Good,” the father said, “And we’re going to hold all of those who have prayed for us responsible.”
Although the husband’s response was meant to be in jest, it reflects an important understanding about prayer. Prayer is not about wrestling favors and gifts from an unwilling God; prayer is about trying to understand and accept God’s will for us. True prayer is seeking God’s will in all things; to give thanks for what God has given us by sharing those gifts with one another; to treasure love and forgiveness, mercy and reconciliation above all else. Thomas More, the English saint and martyr captured the essence of prayer when he wrote, “Give us the grace, O Lord, to work for what we pray for.” So, what are we willing to work and pray for? Pray like it’s all up to God, then work like it’s all up to us. Because prayer is not a spare wheel we take out only when needed; prayer is the steering wheel that directs us in the right path.

When golf balls were first manufactured, the covers were made smooth. Then it was discovered that after the ball had been roughed up, one could get more distance out of it. So, companies started manufacturing the balls with dimpled covers. So, it is with life; maybe it takes some rough spots to make us go farther. These days most people aren’t going anywhere, but if you sometimes feel like you’re living diagonally in a parallel universe, accept your suffering. It can stretch your heart to make room for greater joy and love, because in the words of the 16th c. Spanish monk, St. John of the Cross, “One act of thanksgiving when things are going bad is worth a thousand when things are going well.”
