WEEKLY MESSAGE – October 11th
The Church is open for “live” worships on Sundays at 8 & 10 am. Please note the guidelines below, which the Diocese is requiring to be followed for all in-person worship.
- If you feel sick in any way or have any of the symptoms for COVID-19, please do not come to church.
- All attendees must sign the register book – one family member can list all the members.
- Those who live in the same household will be permitted to sit together in the same pew; but social distance from other attendees in alternate pews which will be set apart in advance.
- Hand sanitizers will be available in the Narthex, and we ask that you use them, or your own, when you arrive at Church.
- Facemasks must always be worn while in church.
- There will be no physical sign of peace exchanged, at this time – except amongst family members.
- The line for the reception of Holy Communion will follow appropriate distancing, as marked on the floor.
- The Eucharist will be given in one kind in the hand only. We ask that you kindly keep your mask on as you receive Communion. Then step to the side, lift your mask, and consume the wafer before putting your mask back on and returning to your seat
- Collection plates will be placed in the back of the church for your convenience – the plates will not be passed during Mass.
- The Church building will be appropriately sanitized before and between Masses, as well as the restrooms.
RECTOR’S MESSAGE – Fr. Thomas.
A man was sleeping one night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light and God appeared. The Lord told the man he had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock out in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might. So, this he did, day after day. For many years he toiled from sun up to sundown, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all his might! Each night the man returned to his cabin sore and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain. Seeing that the man was showing discouragement, the Adversary decided to enter the picture by placing thoughts into his weary mind. “You have been pushing against that rock for a long time and it hasn’t moved.” Thus, he gave the man the impression that the task was impossible and that he was a failure. These thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man. Satan said, “Why kill yourself over this? You tried. Quit wasting your time and move on.” That’s what the weary man planned to do, but decided to make it a matter of prayer and to take the troubled thoughts to the Lord.
“Lord,” he said, “I have labored long and hard in Your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock by a millimeter. What is wrong? What am I failing?” The Lord responded compassionately, “My child, when I asked you to serve Me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all of your strength, which you have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push. And now you come to Me with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But is that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back shiny and brown, your hands are callused from constant pressure, your legs have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much, and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have. True, you haven’t moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient, to push and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom. That you have done. Now I, my child, will move the rock.”
OK, so maybe we can’t move mountains, especially when life doesn’t always “go our way,” but we can with an obedient faith move “mountains” with God’s help. Who knows what we can accomplish as long as we continue to PUSH. (Pray Until Something Happens!!) Because “He who fails is not the one who tries and falls, but the one who doesn’t try at all.”

RECTOR’S MESSAGE – Fr. Thomas.
This Sunday is the commemoration of Saint Francis; the Italian friar who left a life of fame, riches, and the comforts of home to preach and live among the poor and forgotten in the early 13th C. For someone who never wrote a book, or held an official office in the Church (although he did receive deacon’s orders later in life,) his abiding influence has been enormous. He started life as a “swashbuckling” rich young man, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant in central Italy. But after a near fatal disease, from which he recovered, he turned his life completely around, renouncing the distractions of the world and even stripping off his clothes in the public square before the bishop and all the towns folk. Imagine Charlie Sheen or Tom Cruise doing that in Times Square to give their life over to the Lord. (On second thought, before the pandemic, would anyone have noticed in Times Square?).
It seems that those who did the most for humanity have been those who seemingly had little to work with in the world’s eyes. Jesus said, “The greatest among you must be servant of all.” Do we see ourselves as servants or just “volunteers?” A servant serves no matter what; a volunteer does so when it’s convenient.
It’s important to remember, especially during these challenging times, that we all have something to give to God – no matter how small or insignificant we, or the world, may perceive it. Remember the boy who offered two fish and five loaves of bread to Jesus who fed five thousand? Even a little can be made great in the hands of God. Francis’ love of God’s creation, in all its entirety, particularly nature and animals, may be an attractive feature of his life; but not everyone is called to a life of poverty or celibacy. Yet, in our own ways, even when they seem unimportant, we can show love and reverence for all. As St. Francis was fond of saying, “Preach the Gospel, in words if necessary.”

I am still pleased to remind you that the Diocese has lifted the moratorium for in-church worship and that St. David’s will be re-opening its doors Sunday, October 4, 2020 for both the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. masses! Weekday masses will resume next week – on Tuesday mornings at 8:30 am and Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm. Around the end of the 19th century as African colonialism began to wane and the economic market opened up, two salesmen were sent by a British shoe manufacturer to Africa to investigate the market potential. The first salesman reported back, “There’s no potential here – nobody wears shoes.” The second salesman reported back, “There is massive potential here – nobody wears shoes.”
So is the glass half full or half empty? Do we look at life with fear, or see opportunity in everyday challenges? Perhaps we can’t change circumstances or other people; so if you don’t like the way your life looks, try changing the way you look at life. Last week I spoke about being in a state of uncertainty about who we are during the pandemic. Here’s a different account with regards to knowing who we are. “I feel sick,” said the voice from the bedroom. “You’re not sick, get up and get ready for school,” said the mother outside the door. “I hate school and I’m not going, “was the reply. “I’m always messing up and getting told off. The teachers hate me and constantly complain about me.” “I’m sorry, but you’re going to school, and that’s final!” said the mother. “Mistakes are how we learn and develop so please try not to take criticism so personally. I also can’t believe that nobody likes you; you have a lot of friends. Besides, you’re the Principal.”
As Christians, we’ve all been given the responsibility and privilege of spreading the Good News of God’s love, in thought, word, and deed. As we know all too well, love will find a way, but indifference will find an excuse. In recent months we may not have been in a position to change our circumstances or other people, but “If you don’t like the way your life looks, try changing the way you look at life.”

During these days of pandemic shut down, I can easily understand how some folks aren’t sure what’s going to happen next, or who they are these days. I like the story about the retired English Bishop who was visiting a local nursing home. He leaned forward to one rather vague looking old gentleman and enquired, “Do you know who I am?” “No”, came the rather abrupt reply, “but don’t worry, the nurse will tell you who you are.”
As the old song reminds us, “They will know we are Christians by our love.” Regardless of what else happens around us, we can be assured of God’s never failing kindness and support; for as another old hymn reminds us, even during times of “Change and decay when all around I see, O Thou who changest not, abide with me.” So, remember, when you get to your wit’s end, you’ll find God there because “Life doesn’t come with a bow, but it’s still a gift.”

The Diocese of Southeast Florida – has extended the ban on Church-wide in-person services, events and meetings and other activity until further notice. Live-streaming and recording of worship will continue, but no other in-person activity is permitted.
