WEEKLY MESSAGE – November 10, 2023

WEEKLY MESSAGE – November 10th – Fr. Cederberg

It’s been said that the youth are the future of the church. That’s true, but only partially. Youth are not only the future, but they are also with us now. Now, today, they bring their gifts of energy and curiosity that many of us older ones have forgotten. They ask the questions of a new generation. Questions that challenge our old ways of thinking. Questions that we need to honor for the health of the church today. There was a reason that Jesus held up children as our examples to emulate. Children are our teachers. They help us to grow. They show us how to trust. This coming Sunday is Youth Sunday. The youth are planning the service and participating in leading it. They are also hosting a picnic for everyone afterwards. It is a stretch for them as they learn how to step into the mantle of leadership. Come and look forward to being blessed.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – November 3, 2023

The celebration for this coming Sunday, and actually always November 1st, is the celebration of All Saints.  It is a day when we celebrate all of us as saints, and not just the big named ones that lived in the past.  I have to say, though, that if we think about it that way we run the danger of missing the point.  It isn’t about all of the people, big and small, that have lived saintly lives.  Rather it is about the miracle of what Christ has done in and through us.  All saints, no matter how famous, have glaring imperfections.  Peter denied the Lord when it counted.  Paul was a violent persecutor of the church.  All of us, in our honest moments, know just how very far we fall from the goals we set for ourselves.  What is amazing is that God chooses us, and uses us, to reveal his love and grace.  Together we are an incredible explosion of color, shining his light and glory into the world.  How beautiful!  How amazing!  How wonderful to be a part of it all!

WEEKLY MESSAGE – October 27th – Fr. Cederberg

Costumes.  Masks.  Little Power Rangers and princesses making their way through neighborhoods with the universal appeal “Trick or Treat”!  While for some Halloween is an exalting of darkness and death, for others it is an opportunity for celebration and role play.  Psychologists tell us that children dressing up and playing a character is an important part of learning what role they want to play in a challenging and often frightening world.  To dress up as a princess or a ninja warrior is a way for them to enter imaginatively into the universal fight between light and darkness, good and evil.  Adults, too, need to play with different roles to see which ones fit best the person they are trying to become.  That is what St. Paul is inviting when he tells us to “clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ”.  (Rom. 13:14).  It may take a good deal of imagination, and maybe even play, to figure out what that means in our very challenging world, and yet that is the path to our growth.  A good thing to think and pray about as we anticipate that knock on the door Halloween night.  What costume am I wearing?

WEEKLY MESSAGE – October 20th – Fr. Cederberg

I am so pleased.  A couple of our kids here at St. David’s have given me pictures that they have drawn.  It reminds me of how we imitate our Creator when we create something ourselves.  Sometimes it’s a piece of art.  Sometimes it’s singing a song or designing a room.  My wife is a great cook, and she loves to bake or try out challenging recipes.  The world can force us into a repetitive mold in which we keep doing things simply because they need to get done.  That’s responsible, good and faithful.  And yet, there is something more inside of us that craves expression.  We want to see the colorful, the curious, even the silly.  We need to give ourselves permission to express it.  When we do, even mundane, repetitive tasks become more interesting.  And that’s not an accident.  The desire to be creative is a God-given yearning.  Let’s find ways to express it.  Want to sketch?

WEEKLY MESSAGE – October 13th, 2023

WEEKLY MESSAGE – October 15th – Fr. Cederberg

We know in our gut that violence is wrong, don’t we?  We recoil from it.  We are repulsed by it.  In our heart of hearts we know that we are made in the image of God, and that everyone needs to be treated with respect and dignity.  That’s why the events of this past weekend in Israel are so very troubling.  I believe that in our repulsion we echo the passion of Christ when he, too, is repulsed by the degrading of the innocent and in the taking of human life.  So we turn those emotions and tears into prayers to him, knowing that even though we may feel powerless, he is powerful.  He hears the cry of those suffering, and is working to bring an end to violence and healing to the wounded.  Let us never give up empathizing with those who suffer.  Let us never give up caring.  Let us never give up helping in very tangible ways those whom God has called us to serve.
