WEEKLY MESSAGE – September 20, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – September 20th – Bishop McGregor

Every four years during the fall, we are reminded of our civic opportunity, responsibility and free right we have to vote. I think sometimes people forget how important this is for us as Americans and we get caught up in the politics. As a result, some of us get frustrated with the rhetoric and we decide not to even vote as a protest. However, our vote does matter. The Episcopal Church has come up with an Election Toolkit. It provides opportunities for us to engage as a citizen in the election. I have taken the liberty to make this available for the St. David’s parishioners to read and consider how to engage. Here’s the link:  https://www.episcopalchurch.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2024/01/Vote-Faithfully-2024-OGR-Election-Engagement-Toolkit.pdf

I came across a quote from one of the most famous university presidents during the last three generations, Theodore Hesburgh from Notre Dame. He was known for putting the University on the map because he fought for education for all people.  He believed human rights for all was imperative. He fought for gender issues and accepted women into the University of Notre Dame. He also played a significant role as a member of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission fight for equality for all. I think he said it best regarding voting …..“Voting is a civic sacrament.” I encourage you to reflect on this saying throughout the week.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – September 15, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – September 15th – Bishop McGregor

Politics, Finances and Religion!
We have an unwritten rule in our society: don’t talk about politics, finances and religion in gatherings. Partly because they can polarize and divide us, and because they are so personal, passionate people may say things they regret later.  Even in writing this, I realize I’m taking a great risk even to mention them. I may be treading on thin water but nevertheless I think it is my duty to inform us that over the course of the next three months we will be discussing the importance of everyone voting and reflecting on our parish stewardship campaign in context of our faith. I trust that we will have an open, prayerful heart, granting mercy and giving grace to each other as we reflect on these subjects.
This week I wanted to share with you what our Presiding Bishop Michael Curry said about voting: “Cast your vote, not on a partisan basis, not based on your biases, but vote your values. Vote the values of human dignity and equality. Vote the values of the rock on which this country was built. Vote.”
I’m wondering if you would be able to take some time out of your week to register to vote if you haven’t already and began to write down some of your values as a Christian? If you need a little help you can look at this website for additional information: https://www.thebehavioralscientist.com/list-of-values . Enjoy!

WEEKLY MESSAGE – September 6, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – September 8th – Bishop McGregor

Listen to your body! I have heard this phrase from others and sometimes from my wife Patsy about listening to my body. What is my body saying to me? I must confess, I’m was pretty clueless to what my body was saying to me when I was younger. I felt like I could do whatever I wanted and did it. I persevered through anything and this became my mechanism in life.
But later in life I found out that I had high blood pressure, then my good cholesterol was low, then my left knee began to ache regularly, then I had sleep apnea, then acid reflux and etc. These have become symptoms of not listening to my body. Notice it didn’t happen all at once but gradually. It happened because I failed to listen to my body.
God has created each one of us with a body and spirit. It is important that we take care of our body as the temple of God. “The benefits of learning to listen to your body can be immense. It will allow you to make better decisions about your physical and mental health. Further, our mind’s perception of events informs and guides our immune system to help us be better able to respond to future threats” (Cook, 2016).
Let’s listen to our bodies!

WEEKLY MESSAGE – August 30, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – August 30th – Bishop McGregor

Tomorrow, we will celebrate the life of Pauline Barbara Hasting-Griffin at St. David’s in the Pines. It’s a time when we, the body of Christ gathers with lots of other friends who are seekers, dechurched, other faith traditions and even atheists will attend to show their respects and closure of life lived on earth. It’s a significant rite of passage for Christians.
For us it’s a reminder of our savior’s death and resurrection during Holy Week. Funerals are indeed times when we experience a wide range of feelings as we honor a life and confront our own beliefs and emotions about death and the afterlife. There are lots of mixed emotions including bitter, mad, numb, betrayed, grieving along with joy, hope, respect, thankful, and love. It’s important to acknowledge and embrace the full spectrum of emotions that we may be feeling. It is bittersweet.
During these times of bittersweetness in life, may we be reminded of what our savior Jesus Christ said to Martha after Lazarus’ death, “I am the Resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live”. This is a reminder of the promise of resurrection and life that we hold dear, even amidst the sorrow and grief. This assurance provides comfort and hope, offering a perspective that transcends the immediate pain of loss. It’s in these gatherings that we often find solace and strength in one another.
