WEEKLY MESSAGE – May 17th – Bishop McGregor

Happy Pentecost
The word “Pentecost” is Greek, meaning fifty, reflecting the fifty-day countdown after Easter. It is one of three great Jewish pilgrimage festivals (the others being Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles).  Pentecost is also known as the Feast of Harvest or Feast of Weeks (seven weeks after the Passover). It was a time when the people thanked God for the giving of their harvest. In this case it was first fruits of the harvest.
After the temple was destroyed in 70 AD, the Jews changed this celebration to focus more on the giving of the Torah (the first five books of the temple.
For us Christians, Pentecost is a major feast for us as we thank God for giving us the Holy Spirit which dwells within every Christian. Secondly, we celebrate Pentecost as the inauguration of the Church’s mission in the world. Empowered by the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are to go out into our neighborhoods and the wider world; Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, witnessing to the risen Christ.
What does witnessing look like for you in your neighborhood? In your county? In your world?
