WEEKLY MESSAGE – December 29, 2023

WEEKLY MESSAGE – December 29th  – Fr. Cederberg

We call January 1st New Year’s Day.  For the church, however, it is the Feast of the Holy Name.  On this day, eight days after Jesus’ birth, he was circumcised and given the name “Jesus”.  The name Jesus means “The Lord saves”.  In Hebrew it is the same as the name “Joshua”, the leader that brought the wandering children of Israel into the land of promise.  Jesus is the one who brings us all into the new promised land; a place where every tear is dried, and every sorrow healed.  So this year, when you are toasting the coming of the new year, take a moment also to toast the gift of a new life, of a new promised land, that comes through Jesus.  He’s the one leading us there.  Cheers!

WEEKLY MESSAGE – December 22nd  – Fr. Cederberg

How strange it is that God would become human flesh.  Skin and bones.  Eyebrows and toenails.  What has someone infinite like God got to do with such things?  Good question.  Philosophers through the ages have been offended by the idea.  Yet, it all comes down to one thing:  Love.  We have a God who does not want to remain aloof from us, shaking his head at a distance.  We have a God who wants to become like us; to enter into our world of both beauty and heartache.  Perhaps we don’t need to spend so much time trying to understand God.  Perhaps it’s enough to know that he understands us.  A comforting thought.  Merry Christmas!

WEEKLY MESSAGE – December 17th – Fr. Cederberg

How do you pray? Do you feel like God is working in your prayers?

I mentioned this tool in my sermon last week. I have found it helpful in my own prayer life and know that many others use it daily as well. You might want to give it a try, especially during this Advent season. It is called the Daily Examen. Just follow these simple steps, which can be added on to your regular daily prayer time either in the morning or at night.

1) Become aware of God’s loving presence.

2) Review the events of the day with gratitude.

3) As you go over the day, try to identify the high point and low point of the day.

4) Now offer each to God. Where was God’s love during those events?

5) Is there anything that God might be calling you to do in light of your experience? A phone call to someone forgotten? A word of encouragement? A reward for a job well done?

6) Offer up the coming day, anticipating his presence with you.

God loves talking to us, and showing us just how precious we are to him. Advent is a great time to slow down and let him romance us with his love.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – December 8, 2023

WEEKLY MESSAGE – December 10th – Fr. Cederberg

Time is such a strange thing.  We talk about saving it, killing it, and finding it, yet it eludes us on every side.  “Where did the time go?” we ask, with no good answer.  We remain puzzled.
Perhaps that is why the Church calendar is such a tremendous help.  It is a story of the eternal one who lived outside of time yet became human and lived in time along with us.  He brought eternity to we who know only the march of time and sanctifies our experience.  He makes us eternal, and holy.
The next time you check your watch or phone to see what time it is, you might ask if what you see really is the time.  What matters isn’t the hours and minutes of the day, but rather the gift of the eternal one, that permeates them. For those who live in the eternal things are never too early, too late, or even on time.  The love of God embraces us, guaranteeing that wherever we are, whatever we are doing, it is always the perfect time to relax and let ourselves be loved and used by him.

WEEKLY MESSAGE – December 1, 2023

WEEKLY MESSAGE – December 1st – Fr. Cederberg
The word “advent” means coming into place, or arrival. For the Christian Church that means the arrival of Jesus, who we have been waiting for. So, what do we do while we wait? We prepare. Like getting our house in order before a guest arrives, the season of Advent is a time to get our souls in order for the arrival of our King. It’s a time to clean house, getting rid of things that are unproductive or just taking up room, and adding things that bring beauty and hospitality for our guest. What kinds of things in your soul need to go? What kinds of things need to be brought in? Good things to meditate on as we begin our Advent season of preparation.
