WEEKLY MESSAGE – June 30th – Fr. McManus

WEEKLY MESSAGE – June 30th – Fr. McManus

The Gospel this Sunday is summarized as follows:

“Jesus said, ‘Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.’”

Just so we get this straight: whoever welcomes you welcomes Jesus, and whoever welcomes your friend or neighbor or family member or work colleague or elected official or mother-in-law or next door neighbor or chatty seat companion on an airplane or vendor at the state fair or grocery checker or barber or the UPS driver or the kid who hit your new car with a soccer ball…and so on and so forth…welcomes God?

Whoever welcomes you welcomes me. And whoever welcomes any one of us welcomes Jesus, welcomes God.

Also in Matthew’s gospel from chapter 18 “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me…” and from chapter 25 “The king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these…you did it to me.’”

Questions: Who do you welcome?  At home? At church?

WEEKLY MESSAGE – June 18th – Fr. McManus

I go to a local gym a couple of days per week. They are good marketers and their latest strategy is have their patrons think about “mindfulness”.  There are three ways that they suggest to be mindful: eating well each day, taking five quiet minutes per day and do 20 minutes of light exercise/movement per day.

Then to make a daily mindful goal into a habit, you are asked to place a different color bean (black bean, red bean or a white bean) into a clear jar to have a visual showing of your progress. Good idea, I thought! I have a dropped a few beans into the community jar!

What if we did a similar community clear glass jar at St. David’s?  What if we kept the black and red beans for eating well and light exercise, but then substituted prayer/ meditation for mindfulness? White bean.

Remember the goal is to make a daily goal into a good habit. What do you think?

WEEKLY MESSAGE – June 9th – Fr. McManus

Where do you go to encounter God? Do you have a favorite place for divine inspiration? Some of you will instinctively think of going to church. Another way to phrase the question is, “Where do you go when you really need to think and make a decision?” Perhaps some of you embrace nature by going to the park. Others prefer being by a body of water such as a pond, lake, river, or ocean.

American theologian the Rev. Frederick Buechner wrote in his book Wishful Thinking: A Theological ABC, “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

So, I challenge you to go to your favorite place and be with God for five minutes.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – June 2nd – Fr. Thomas

I’ve only been “kicked out” of a church once in my life. Some twenty plus years ago I was attending an ecumenical conference in Rome. After the conclusion of the conference, I traveled up to Assisi, the home of St. Francis. It was a Sunday morning and I went to mass at the basilica dedicated to their famous saint. Although I’m not fluent in Italian, I was familiar with the first part of the mass and the scripture readings, but when it came time for the sermon, I didn’t understand what the preacher was saying. So, to make good use of the time, I pulled out my binoculars and meditated on the gorgeous frescoes by Giotto, which adorn the upper walls of the cathedral. I studied Renaissance art in college and was thoroughly impressed by the collection of images that had recently been restored to their former quality.

My “meditative” moment came to an abrupt end, however, when the lead usher came up the aisle, tapped me on the shoulder, and escorted me out of the church, thinking that I was simply some random tourist only there to venerate the paintings and not participate in the communal worship. Coincidentally, I returned to Assisi some years later with Erin and my in-laws, and visited the basilica, and wouldn’t you know it, that same usher was at the main entrance! Not wishing to relive the previous experience, I quickly and quietly found an alternate entrance!

My thirty-two plus years among you at St. David’s has been a rich blessing to me, but now is the time for me to leave this wonderful church. Please know that all of you will forever be in my, and Erin’s thoughts and prayers. I trust the search committee and Vestry will find a suitable and competent Rector in good time. And remember, it’s not all about the Rector and staff – it’s about our relationship with God – our life, witness and devotion to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, through the intercession of His blessed mother Mary. Amen.
