WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – October 28th – Fr. Thomas
In my last sermon at my first parish in Rhode Island, where I happily served as the assistant priest for three years, I told the story about a rector who appeared to spend an inordinate amount of time maintaining the memorial garden of the church rather than out amongst the people in the parish. When asked why he spent so much time there he replied, “Because I feel it’s important to spend more time with the people who are paying my salary.” Nobody laughed, but you get the point. The parish had a sizeable endowment, the income of which allowed the parish to afford an assistant, as well as a small cemetery on the church grounds.
Tuesday, November 1st, is the Solemnity of All Saints Day, but what often gets “lost” in the shadows is the Commemoration of All Souls, on November 2nd, which recognizes those who perhaps didn’t live recognizably “saintly” lives, but who are still on the road to heaven, although they need a little longer to be “cleansed” and prepared for the final “wedding banquet” in heaven. It’s sort of like driving your vehicle through the car wash: for some people, one needs to drive through more than a few times to get thoroughly cleansed!
As we remember those who have departed this life, I encourage you to seriously consider St. David’s Church in your estate planning; the rewards of which will ensure the continuation of the ministries we support. If you need advice on how to arrange for a part of your estate to be left to St. David’s, either in a life insurance policy, annuity, appreciated property or real estate; a representative from the parish will be willing to help you. Without a “will,” you leave the decision of how your assets are distributed to the State of Florida or the IRS.
Anybody can start the race, but they don’t give out the awards until you finish; but in the end, all of us go down to the dust, where even at the grave we make our song, “Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!”

The baseball season is nearing its end with the playoffs going on at present. Leith Anderson, a pastor, shares an experience growing up as a boy outside of New York City. He was an avid fan of the old Brooklyn Dodgers. One day his father took him to a World Series game between the Dodgers and the Yankees. He was so excited, and he just knew that the Dodgers would trounce the Yankees. Unfortunately, the Dodgers never got on base, and his excitement was shattered. Years later he was engrossed in a conversation with a man who was a “walking sports almanac.” Leith told him about the first major league game he ever attended and added, “It was such a disappointment. I was a Dodgers fan and the Dodgers never got on base.” The man replied, “You were there? You were at the game when Don Larsen pitched the first perfect game in World Series history?” Leith replied, “Yeah, but uh, we lost.”
Sometimes it’s difficult to see the good news within the apparent and overwhelming bad news. The Good News, the Gospel we proclaim, shines through the darkest moments of our life, our nation, and the world. Yes, you “can’t win them all.” Remember that Babe Ruth held the record for the most career home runs, and at the same time the most strikeouts! Brett Farve, likewise, held the record for some time for throwing the most touchdown passes, and the most interceptions. Man O War, lost only one race to a horse named “Upset,” hence the origin of the word in our vocabulary.
Remember, the Old Testament character Job- he was not really patient; but he was persistent! Anybody can start the race in the real world, but they don’t give out the awards until you finish. We take the good with the bad, knowing that in the end, God wins: because “Love is stronger than death.”

As a child, I remember spending many Saturday evenings with my grandparents and watching the Ed Sullivan Show on television. Among the memories was watching the guys who would come out on the stage and spin china plates on vertical poles; first one, then another, and then more at the same time. After half a dozen or so, you’d hold your breath waiting for the plates to come crashing down.
How often in life do we feel like we’re juggling too many things at once? If you have three calendars, two computer screens, and two phones, you’re probably too busy. The paradox, however, is that many people are busy and yet bored at the same time. While running from one meeting or event to the next, we wonder if anything important is really happening. While trying to keep up with the many tasks and commitments, we are not sure that it would make any difference if we did nothing at all. While pushing ourselves in all directions, we doubt if anyone really cares. In short, our lives are full, but unfulfilled. Boredom can be linked to resentment. When we are busy, yet wondering if our busyness means anything to anyone, we feel manipulated and exploited. Of course, anyone with multiple children, several jobs, a spouse, and aging parents, will inevitably feel overworked and stressed out. All of which can lead to anger, depression, or related health issues.
Jesus has an answer. He wants to bring us to a place where we belong. But His call to live a spiritual life can only be heard when we are willing to recognize our “spiritual homelessness.” Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who know their need of God.” Recognizing that our true home is in heaven will keep us focused on the primary things in this life; and “All the other things shall be yours as well.”
