In his book Overcoming Life’s Disappointments, Rabbi Harold Kushner writes about a man whose wife suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Every day she slipped further and further away in the fog of dementia – but every day he would come to spend time with her. The couple’s heartbroken friends would ask him, “Why do you keep going when she doesn’t even know who you are?” And he would always reply, “Because I know who I am.”

The husband’s faithfulness is the perfect answer to the question Jesus posed to St. Peter and others: “Who do you say that I am?” In realizing exactly who Jesus is and the meaning of His life, death, and resurrection, we come to realize who we are and what our lives are all about. As Christians, we have been baptized into his death and resurrection. Our love and compassion for family and friends, our dedication to following the principles of the Gospel, our simple acts of love and kindness are all visible signs of our faith in Jesus as our Messiah and Lord.

Next Wednesday, February 2, is the Feast of the Presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple. If there was any doubt amongst the attendees at that customary Jewish event, the prophet Simeon and Anna put it to rest by proclaiming that they had seen the Messiah who had at last come into the world. When people see us, do they see Jesus at work in the world today? When we show kindness to those who can repay us, it’s called networking. When we show kindness with no thought of repayment, it’s called love. May the love of God be visible in our lives because we know who our Savior is, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Father Smith complemented Farmer Jones on keeping such a beautiful garden and tried to give God praise for being so good to Farmer Jones, who replied, “Ha! You should have seen this place when God had it all to Himself!”

Well, we know that it’s a “team effort,” and the Good News is that we’re not in this walk of life alone. So, I’ll share some encouraging words from St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians (4:13) “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Moreover, we learn over time that the road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called Confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flats called Jobs, however, if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, insurance called Faith, and a driver called Jesus, you will make it to a place called Success – which we know as Heaven!

A billboard once seen in New England read, “Pray, it works.” That’s a pragmatic point of view, but what if the prayers don’t “work?” Do we stop praying? Get mad at God? If prayer is merely a way of getting what we want, then how does one feel about God when we don’t get everything we think we deserve in life? Perhaps a better alternative would be “Pray – Period!” If prayer keeps us connected with God, then it is successful. To quote the Rolling Stones, “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, well, you just might find, you get what you need.”

St. Paul writes, “Pray without ceasing.” God is not like the persistent woman in the parable who kept harassing the judge until he finally relented. God wants us to remain in a relationship with Him, but perhaps more importantly, the purpose of a close prayerful relationship is to change us, not to change God’s mind. Everyone thinks of changing humanity; but few think of changing themselves. However, change does not happen automatically, or without work and prayer on our end. Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Russian prisoner of war, succinctly said back in 1985 that “Men have forgotten God. That’s why all this has happened.” Amen!!

So, pray to God, but keep rowing to the shore, because God promises a safe landing, not a smooth passage. And remember, contentment doesn’t mean getting all you want, but enjoying what you have – because it’s not what they take from you that counts, it’s what you do with what you have left!

So, another year is upon us. For most folks, 2021 is a year we won’t forget. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could simply hit the “pause” or “re-wind” button in our life? Start off with a clean slate. The Good News is that God has provided a way to start over. St. Paul writes to the Corinthians that “Those who are in Christ are a new creation.” He goes on to say, “I haven’t already achieved perfection but I keep working toward that day and strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which Jesus calls us to heaven.”

January 6th was the Feast of the Epiphany. The Wise Men who visited Bethlehem must have been surprised to find the new-born king not in a palace but in a stable! Following stars and finding stables are common occurrences in life. Who hasn’t at some time fixed his or her gaze on some lofty star that leads us in a totally unexpected direction? A college graduate leaves school full of dreams and expectations only to wake up one day and discover a life of drudgery which they promised to avoid. A recent retiree discovers that life without work isn’t what it’s “cracked up” to be. What enables people of every age to turn their “stables” into sanctuaries? All share one thing in common; they looked for God in the stable. Who would have faulted the Wise Men if they’d turned around in disappointment and went back to their comfortable lives in Persia? And yet, their lives were transformed forever. Nothing would ever be the same, as their faith made them return by “another road.”

2022 will probably provide its share of joys and disappointments. If we look for God’s purpose in life and give our best efforts to God, we might find that we too are led in a new direction. As we journey forth on a daily basis, let us go by another way, because the saints in every age found the faith to turn the world upside down when they followed a star and found a stable.
