A middle aged couple arrived at a little hotel desk in a busy city one stormy night. The lady was pregnant, tired and ill. They had hunted all over town and found no place to sleep. When the young hotel manager realized their need, he said to the husband, “I don’t have any rooms left, but I’m sorry about your wife. My wife and I wouldn’t miss our room; so take it and stay here for the night.”
Two years later, the guest was revealed as a close relative of John Jacob Astor, who shortly thereafter, told the manager, “If you will allow me, I will build for you the greatest hotel ever erected in the United States.”
For years that young man, George Boldt, was the manager of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. He had practiced, TLC, Tender, Loving, Care. When we show kindness to those who can repay us, it’s called networking. When we show kindness with no thought of repayment, it’s called love.

St. George’s Center: There is very good news to share about St. George’s Center! They are merging with St. Mark’s in Palm Beach Gardens and will be able to replace their old buildings with a new facility. St. Mark’s will own the facility and lease it to St. George’s for a nominal fee. The new facility will allow the Center to offer more services to the clientele in Riviera Beach. While the construction is underway during 2022, the Center will operate from a temporary facility yet to be determined. I will share more info as it becomes available. Joyce Parker 561-312-2719

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less than today, a ten year old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. “How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked. “Fifty cents,” replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and looked closely at the coins in it. “Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?” he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. “Thirty five cents,” she brusquely answered. The little boy again counted his coins and said, “I’ll just have the plain ice cream.” The waitress brought the ice cream, placed the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress returned to the table, tears came to her eyes. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he wanted to leave enough for the tip.
How often do we overlook those who serve or take for granted those whose job is not necessarily high paying, but if they didn’t do it many would notice? In the words of the late jazz musician, Lionel Hampton, “Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart, not in the mind.”

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – September 12th – Fr. Thomas
After a great amount of difficulty and frustration, a young couple finally conceived their first child – in fact, the mother was carrying triplets. Her doctors insisted that she stay in bed for the duration of her pregnancy. After their friends learned the exciting news, flowers, notes, and cards filled their small house. After church, the pastor said to the husband, “We’ll be praying for you two in these next few months.” The husband’s response caught the pastor a little off guard. “Good,” he said, “And we’re going to hold all of those who prayed for us responsible.”
Although the reply was meant to be in jest, it reflects an important understanding about prayer. Prayer is not the wrestling of favors and gifts from a stingy God. Prayer is about trying to understand and accept God’s will for us. True prayer is seeking God’s will in all things – to give thanks for what God has given us by sharing those gifts with one another; to treasure His love and forgiveness and reconciliation.
The English saint Thomas More wrote, “Give us the grace, O Lord to work for what we pray for.” So, what prayers are we willing to work for? Our prayerful ACTS (an acronym for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) are the way to living a closer life in the Spirit and being more effective in our discipleship. Prayer is not a spare wheel we take out only when needed; it’s the steering wheel that directs us in the right path. So, pray to God, but keep rowing to the shore, because God promises a safe landing, not necessarily a smooth passage.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – September 5th – Fr. Thomas
Thomas Wheeler, CEO of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, tells on himself: He and his wife were driving along an interstate highway when he noticed that their car was low on gas. Wheeler got off the highway at the next exit and soon found a rundown gas station with just one gas pump. He asked the lone attendant to fill the tank (back in the days prior to self-service) and check the oil; then went for a short walk around the station to stretch his legs.
As he was returning to the car, he noticed that his wife and the attendant were engaged in an animated conversation. The conversation stopped as he paid the attendant. But as he was getting back into the car, he saw the attendant wave and heard him say, “It was great talking to you.”
As they drove out of the station, Wheeler asked his wife if she knew the man. She readily admitted she did. They had gone to high school together and had dated steadily for about a year. “Boy, were you lucky that I came along,” bragged Wheeler. “If you had married him, you’d be the wife of a gas station attendant instead of a chief executive officer.” “My dear,” replied his wife, “If I had married him, he’d be the chief executive officer and you’d be the gas station attendant.”
On this Labor Day Weekend, let us remember that our work here on earth, regardless of our compensation, benefits, and status, is a preparation for the eternal life promised to us as disciples of Christ. Our job is to make new Christians, and to make Christians new.
