WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – January 3rd – Fr. Thomas.

A story is told of a little boy who was to play the part of the Innkeeper in the annual children’s Christmas play at his church. Each time during the rehearsal when it came time for him to tell Joseph and Mary that there was no room, he couldn’t say his lines. The director finally asked him why he was having so much trouble. He told him, “I just can’t send Jesus away! He can have my room!”

Is there room in our holiday, our heart, our home, for worship of Jesus? God became flesh so that we could become like God, a living member of His family. This is a God worth believing in; one who is willing to ‘Walk a mile in our shoes.” Yet, it all started in a stable in Bethlehem, and is incarnate in our hearts and lives in every hour, every day, every year of our lives. To quote the 20th c. English poet John Betjeman: “No love that in a family dwells, no caroling in frosty air, nor all the steeple shaking bells can with this single truth compare, that God was man in Palestine and lives today in bread and wine.”

So the hot lunches with to-go sandwich bags for a later dinner will continue for a while. Thank you for the ongoing support! We continue to provide 300± sandwiches every week. If you are working and cannot come Wednesday mornings please feel free to call me to set up a Tuesday night drop off.

Sunday School is back in operation with the necessary protocols in place.

This week’s “Rector’s Message” comes from my wife Erin, whose poetic skills are evident once again in this poem which the young people recited at the 10 a.m. mass last week.

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2020!!!

T’was the night before Christmas
And throughout the earth
God’s children were waiting
For our Dear Savior’s birth

The people in 2020
Had been through quite an ordeal
The COVID pandemic
Their hearts would try to steal

But God in His mercy
Gave strength and His love
To all His Children
To trust in above!

They would gather in small groups
Or meet via Zoom
Nothing could dampen their faith
Even if they weren’t in the same room

Instagrams, texts, phone calls
And only greetings by Skype
Could not put a damper
On the impending blessed night!

Much care was taken to decorate
And bring out the best
In the year of the Coronavirus
That had put all to the test!

So, as we prepare our homes
With tinsel and colored lights
Let us not forget what we celebrate
On this great Holy Night

Mary’s “Yes” at the Annunciation
Is what paved the way
For the world’s greatest gift
Given that first Christmas day

It was God incarnate, in the person of Christ
Who humbled Himself and came to earth
Mercifully bringing salvation to mankind
Through the Blessed Virgin’s Birth

So, God bless you and your families
At this Christmas and beyon’
And many prayers for a healthy and holy
Twenty twenty-one!

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – December 13th – Fr. Thomas.

Some years ago the newsletter of Holy Trinity Church, Vicksburg, Miss., provided this tale:  A man was trying hard to get the ketchup to come out of the bottle.  During his struggle the phone rang, so he asked his four year old daughter to answer the phone.  “It’s the Rector, Daddy,” the child said to her father.  Then she added, “Daddy can’t come to the phone to talk to you right now.  He’s hitting the bottle.”

“Out of the mouths of babes,” as they say!  Regardless of how we celebrate the Christmas season – the birth of God’s Son into the world, and His continued entry into our lives on a daily basis is the message we need to hear and proclaim throughout the entire year.  Joy is a fruit of the Spirit, and true joy is a gift from God.  It does not flow from what’s happening outside of us; it flows from the DNA of God Himself.

To give C.S. Lewis the last word:  “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”  This is why God came into our world to begin with.  With two weeks left before Christmas, it’s not too late to re-evaluate our priorities in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth.  If we learn nothing else at this Christmas season, then we will have discovered that true joy which enlightens the world at all times.

Volunteers to Decorate the Church: Christmas is only two weeks away and we’re asking for volunteers to help Saturday morning at 9 for about 2 hours to decorate the church, set up the tree, hang lights, etc., particularly in preparation for the day school Christmas programs next week.

WEEKLY RECTOR’S MESSAGE – December 6th – Fr. Thomas.

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December.  Female reindeer retain their antlers until after they give birth in the spring.  Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer, every single one of them – from Rudolph to Blitzen – had to be a female.  We should have known – only women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost!

December 6th  is the commemoration of St. Nicholas, the 4th c. bishop of Myra in modern-day Turkey, who threw bags of money through the windows of poor families, and is the prototype of Santa Claus.  Because of the Pandemic, this Christmas may be somewhat different than other years. With all the distractions of the season, it may be difficult for some to stay focused on the  true meaning of the season: the incarnation of God’s Son into our world, and our lives.  What if we let go of the “perfect Christmas,” whatever that might be, and watch for the signs of God’s presence today in our world?  With only three weeks to go, will we be ready for Christmas?  More importantly, are we ready for Jesus’ return – today, and at the Last Day?  As the familiar hymn reminds us, “How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given.  So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven.  No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive Him, still the dear Christ enters in.”

Stockings for Stars Christmas Project:  Thank you for the generous donations I have already received in support of our Christmas Outreach Project.  We have 41 children (28 families) at the Fortin Center in South Bay. After another conversation with the Director, we have decided on providing gift cards to the families so they can purchase what they need most, be it food for Christmas dinner, clothing or toys.  Once I see how much we collect we can determine the value of the gift card each child or family will receive.  All donations need to arrive at my home by Sunday, December 6th. I will be at both services that morning in case you hadn’t mailed your check in time to reach me by the 6th. I will purchase the gift cards on Monday, December 7th.  Please call me if you need to make other arrangements. I am happy to be flexible.

The Annual Parish Meeting will be Sunday, Dec. 13 at 9 a.m. in the parish hall.  New Vestry members will be elected, financial information for this past year will be presented and reports from various ministries will be presented.
